SBC-based Hotmelt Adhesives

Mineral oils are used as plasticizers for SBC-based hotmelt adhesives (HMA) where their function lies in preferentially plasticizing the rubbery phase of the polymer with no or little penetration into the hard styrenic phase.

This results in enhanced overall mechanical performance – as the load-bearing styrenic phase remains intact - while the plastification is not compromised in the rubber phase.

Nynas offers two product series, the Nyflex and Nypar series, for this application. Due to the high HSE properties of these oils – i e low PAH concentration and compliance with FDA(B) or FDA(C) classification - they are being used for pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) in non-woven hygienic applications and tapes & labelling.

The Nyflex family offers naphthenic mineral white oils which - having a higher solvent power while maintaining the white oil criteria (FDA(B) or FDA(C) classification) - lead to a unique mix of properties in the resulting adhesive, such as high plasticizing effect while maintaining good mechanical strength, especially when compared to purely paraffinic counterparts. Also, the comparatively higher viscosity index (VI) of these oils result in more energy efficient processing.

Additional to the Nyflex, we also offer the Nypar series, our range of seminaphthenic (or semiparaffinic) plasticizing oils, which will help you find a suitable candidate for your application.
