Products as resin replacement for ink formulations

When the printing process is completed and the vehicle – be it ink solvent or mineral oil – has been removed, what stay on the substrate (e g sheet of paper) is the solidified resin coloured by the pigments dispersed into it.

There are many different resin types, such as hydrocarbon resins, divided into aliphatic (C5), aromatic (C9) and hybrid resins, and rosin resins which come from the pine plant. One thing all these resins have in common is the relatively high cost which makes it attractive for the printing ink industry to try to reduce their content in the formulation and where possible (part)-replace them with more economical alternatives.

Here's where Nynas can be a good partner for the industry. Our Nyprint series composed in part of a hard bitumenic fraction offers an excellent alternative for replacing or reducing the resin content in the formulation. Furthermore, as Nyprint products are black in colour they will also contribute to reducing the amount of carbon black used in black printing inks, such as news inks.
