Flexsys – a leading supplier to the rubber industry

Flexsys has sales of approximately US$700 million and employs about 1,000 people at more than 20 sites around the world. It has production sites in Europe, North and South America and Asia, and sales offices on every continent, except Australia.

Since May 2007 Flexsys has become a division within, and wholly owned by, Solutia, Inc, which has its head office in St Louis, Missouri, USA.

Flexsys products are used for manufacturing rubber and rubber articles. The chemicals produced by Flexsys help cure and protect the rubber; increase durability and reduce fatigue, hence increasing the lifespan of products; control colour; and provide heat resistance. They are used for rubber product applications in automobiles, aircraft, as well as in truck tyres, belts, hoses and footwear.

Flexsys product groups include accelerators, anti-degradants, anti-reversion agents, post-vulcanization inhibitors, reinforcing agents and vulcanizing agents. One of the latter is Crystex, produced in Sète, France, and in Nienburg Weser, Germany. Crystex is a non-blooming vulcanizing agent for unsaturated elastomers. By being insoluble in elastomers, Crystex retards bin scorch, prevents migration of sulphur and preserves surface tack, which is important in the manufacture of tyres and other plied-up rubber goods.
