Although, not a straight forward task to make a clear-cut categorization, one can say that mineral oils are used by the CMI for two main purposes:
- Either used an additive in a product formulation or
- As a medium for carrying other active ingredients – either by dissolution or dispersion – in a formulation.
Nynas oils are for example used in polymers, partly during the compounding stage as tackifiers and internal lubricants for the compound and partly as plasticizers to adjust the final polymer's mechanical properties. In this case they can contribute to dissolving other active ingredients, such as antioxidants, thereby facilitating the production of a more homogeneous material.
The same characteristics is helpful when Nynas naphthenic oils are used as carrier oils to dissolve other solid ingredients in a material formulation to facilitate the handling and processing during the manufacturing stage. For instance, solid resins can be dissolved in naphthenic oils which comes in handy for the production of printing inks.
Our naphthenic oils have also find use in PVC applications where they are used to reduce the need of phthalate based plasticizers, like DOP and DINP, which is beneficial from both a HSE point of view and a cost saving perspective. We have seen that our Nynas products can replace up to 10% of the phthalates in a PVC formulation.
The relatively high polarity and high density of Nynas oils makes them more stable in solutions compared to paraffinic counterparts. This property is very useful when our Nynas are used in Antifoam applications, water miscible Mould Release Agents, and Rust Prevention applications.
In short, if you are looking for a mineral oil to include in your product and/or process and cannot find the category within the suggested headings, we are sure that we can help you find the product most suited for your business within our product range. Should it not already exist in our product portfolio, we are more than happy to collaborate with you to make a customized product suited for your specific needs.
