Life cycle inventory

Last December, the very first ‘Asphalt Innovation Symposium’ was organised at the University of Antwerp, where Nynas has a bitumen laboratory. The headline theme was Sustainable Development in Asphalt.

One of the speakers was Wim Teugels, Nynas Crude & Feedstock Specialist and Chair of the Eurobitume Task Force LCI Review. He gave an update of what Eurobitume is doing in relation to the life cycle inventory (LCI).

“Using a simple title, ‘LCI, status of the Eurobitume update’, I gave a summary of what had changed since the previous version published in 2012 and what the expected outcome is,” he says.

The purpose of the study is to provide the bitumen industry with a cradle to gate figure of CO2 emissions relating to European bitumen independently of where the crude comes from or in which refinery it is produced.

“This generic bitumen figure can subsequently be used in other tools requiring that input. At the moment, the work is undergoing external review and some changes are still expected.”

Nynas expertise highlighted

This year’s E&E Congress will feature presentations of a large number of technical articles, representing top-level expertise in current bitumen and asphalt technology. Experts from Nynas have contributed to several of these, in some cases as lead author. Dr Anna Steneholm, Group Specialist Toxicology, and Dr Ian Lancaster, UK Technical Manager, have also been selected to give oral presentations.
