Asphalt in High Cross Slope, Germany

In summer 2017, Nynas delivered a carefully chosen PMB grade, Nypol 25, for asphalt layers of a test track.

A bridge paver from SMB Construction International GmbH constructed the steep curves of the oval track. The curves have a cross slope of more than 100 %, the max gradient is/has 49 °.

The asphalt plant Villingen of Deutsche Asphalt GmbH produced the mixes for base courses, binder and wearing course using Nypol 25. This binder was selected in the mix design as the viscosity of the bitumen and the consistency of the asphalt mixes were extremely important, namely the compromise between stiffness and workability that could be achieved in the asphalt for this special geometry.

All of the companies involved confirmed the results obtained with regard to evenness over the curve area.
