Producers choose Nynas NYTEX® oils to boost polyurethane polymers

NYNAS® has developed a series of NYTEX® process oils to improve the performance of polyurethane polymers used in plastics and resins, offering cost efficiency and enhancing a range of everyday products that are found all around us.

Polyurethane polymers are everywhere. We find them in many applications and end-products, from the construction industry to the electronics and automotive markets. They are in the sealant between our bathroom tiles, the underlay beneath the carpet we walk on, the wheels of our skateboard, and the waterproofing membrane when we visit the local swimming pool.

Used to make dielectric resins found in all manner of devices which are central to modern life, polyurethane polymers are also present in our smartphones and even the electric vehicles we drive. They are also used to produce elastomers, which are an essential part of many rubber products including certain types of tyre.

Nynas process oils make life easier

Manufacturers working with polyurethane polymers are now able to use Nynas process oils NYTEX® 8120, NYTEX® 801 and NYTEX® 810 in their formulations. Our naphthenic oils are specially designed to be compatible with polyurethanes, due to the hydrocarbon nature of their polymer structure. Whether it’s an elastomer or resin, introducing naphthenic oil into the process brings a wide range of benefits when the polyurethane is based upon hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB).

Making the polymer easier to process, naphthenic oils improve mechanical performance, maintain the flow of resins, help retain a low dielectric constant and dissipation factor, and lower the total cost for the manufacturer.

Stretching the value chain with NYTEX® oils

“There are many other advantages when using naphthenic oils in HTPB based polyurethane polymers,’’ says Ghislain de Quatrebarbes, Market Manager Process oils. “When NYTEX® 820 is added to zinc oxide reinforced polyurethane elastomers there is a moderate decrease in tensile strength which improves elongation properties without affecting resistance to tear.’’

Adding flexibility and control on a range of key properties, the Nynas NYTEX® range also provides full compliance with health, safety and environmental requirements, and is highly beneficial when used in uncured liquid systems, enabling control of pot life (the time it takes for an initial mixed viscosity to increase) and extending gel time so that resins are workable for a longer period, especially in reactions without a catalyst.

Modifying viscosity while controlling cost

The development of Nynas NYTEX® process oils is good news for producers looking for a cost-effective way to modify viscosity for greater control in pre-mixtures.

“Oils such as NYTEX® 810 and NYTEX® 820 can be used in the formulation to extend it and replace part of the polyol, an organic compound. This enables producers to reduce their cost, while introducing a high quality and efficient component. A good example is the improved electrical insulation characteristics which result when naphthenic oils are used in epoxy or dielectric resins,’’ adds Ghislain de Quatrebarbes.
