Producing NYFLEX® 2120B: The Making of a Unique Oil

The use of hydrotreatment has been a speciality of NYNAS® for many years. With the development and launch of NYFLEX® 2120B, the company utilised its technical expertise to produce a highly refined and pure oil with a low aromatic content.

With its presentation of NYFLEX® 2120B at the FEICA European Adhesive & Sealant Conference and EXPO during the Autumn, producer of specialty naphthenic oils Nynas introduced a unique product to the market. A new addition to the company’s low viscosity portfolio, NYFLEX® 2120B can be used in both heatset and sheet-fed printing inks and delivers value when replacing silicone in sealant formulations.

Designed with a narrow boiling range and very low aromatic content, coupled with excellent solvency, superb low temperature properties and high colour stability, this versatile technical white oil complies with stringent regulations including FDA 178.3620B and the BLUE ANGEL environmental standard.

In order to achieve these product characteristics, NYFLEX® 2120B undertakes a journey from its crude oil source, through a rigorous hydrotreatment process, to become a clean naphthenic oil product.

The process begins in a distillation column, where the crude oil is heated and distilled into different hydrocarbon mixtures (or fractions) according to boiling point. The lighter fractions higher up in the column become distillates suited to the production of naphthenic specialty products.

Next comes the hydrotreatment. The distillate is mixed with hydrogen gas at high pressure and temperature, over a catalyst bed in the reactor. This removes sulphur and nitrogen, while also reducing aromatic content, leading to a highly refined and clean oil. Moreover, when producing NYFLEX® 2120B, the process is even more specialised.

“With NYFLEX® 2120B we make full use of the powerful fractionation capacity of our hydrotreaters to obtain a very narrow distillation range,’’ explains Anna Eriksson, Nynas Technical Manager for the Chemical Industry segment.

“NYFLEX® 2120B is the most severely hydrogenated product in our portfolio, with an aromatic content far below 1 wt.% and a sulphur content in the ppm level. Securing these properties requires a well-defined balance between hydrogen pressure, temperature and occupational time in the hydrotreatment units,’’ adds Anna Eriksson.
