Lowering environmental impact

Nynas is working hard to reduce CO2 emissions and improve sustainability throughout our entire value chain.

25%

By 2035, our strategy targets that at least a quarter of the raw materials used in our naphthenic specialty products will be derived from renewable and/or circular sources.

Raw materials

We have started diversifying our raw materials through the introduction of circular and biobased alternatives. Our NYTRO® BIO 300X, NYTEX® BIO 6200, and EVO range already incorporate these innovations, with more to come. We also conduct annual ESG assessments of critical suppliers.

Production

We are continuously working to reduce emissions in our production processes through:

  • Closing down our Harburg production site.
  • Energy efficiency programmes, including tank insulation and tank farm optimisation.
  • Use of renewable energy sources such as steam from waste/renewable sources and bioLNG.
  • Electrification of smaller units.
  • Long term: address hydrogen generation.

POLLUTION CONTROL

Within our own operations we have a long legacy of being a responsible neighbour by taking corrective actions on legacy environmental issues. For instance, we are capping contaminated sediments in the seabed near our Nynäshamn manufacturing site, which most likely originate from a fire in 1956. We also manage waste efficiently through wastewater treatment plants and sustainable waste handling practices.

Transport

Nynas is improving vessel efficiency with innovative designs and hybrid battery systems, achieving 35 % better fuel efficiency when replacing old vessels.

Depots & logistics

We collaborate with depot owners to minimise their footprint and optimise product flows, ensuring proximity to key markets and reducing transportation emissions.

PACKAGING

Nynas is incorporating recycled materials into our IBC packaging to reduce our environmental impact.

SUSTAINABLE RESEARCH

In 2024, 62% of our R&D projects included sustainability as a key driver, with a focus on improving raw material efficiency and increasing the use of renewable feedstocks.

58% lower Scope 1 & 2 emissions

Since 2017, Nynas has reduced the company’s direct emissions by 58%, surpassing our 2030 target. As production grows, we remain committed to maintaining emissions below 50%. Looking ahead, we are developing near- and long-term targets for Scope 3 emissions, waste reduction, energy consumption, and renewable energy integration to further our sustainability efforts.

Use phase

Nynas products are designed for longevity and superior performance, enabling customers to reduce emissions and save energy. Through our ReSolution Programme, we focus on four key areas:

  • REDUCE – Helping our customers lower emissions, energy consumption, worker exposure, and raw material usage.
  • REINFORCE – Enhancing durability, performance, and product lifespan.
  • RECIRCULATE – Promoting material reuse and recycling.
  • RENEW – Using renewable raw materials to reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions.

End of life

Around 65% of Nynas products can be recycled at the end of their service life, contributing to a more circular economy. Our circular NYTRO RR900X, produced from used transformer oil, is a prime example of re-refined innovation.
