HOT MIX ASPHALT APPLICATIONS

Nypol PMBs deliver improved cohesion and adhesion and superior resistance to cracking and fatigue failure. They are used across a wide range of asphalt mix types, applications and environments, including motorways, race tracks and airports.

Background

Categorised as ‘Grade A’ by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the Spielberg racetrack is a 4,326-kilometer course and can be split into two separate circuits: north and south.

While the track was originally built for motor racing, the area is now also used for go-karting, off-roading and driving experience days. A special feature of this racetrack is the difference in altitude, with a maximum uphill slope of 12 percent, and a maximum downhill slope of 9.3 percent.

When the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix returned to Spielberg in 2014 after over a decade, it was time to plan and prepare the track and pit lane for future races. In particular, the surface and skid resistance had to be improved; plus, the circuit had to adhere to the FIA’s strict water drainage and electronic infrastructure requirements to qualify the track for Formula 1 races in the future.

Solution

In order to fulfil the demanding asphalt and binder regulations, a test field was created in advance by the contractor TEERAG-ASDAG AG. In Spring 2016, the team then paved binder and wearing courses using an asphalt concrete mix, in which both layers, with a thickness of 4 cm, were made using Nypol 65, a Nynas polymer modified binder (PMB). The track and pit stops were completed well ahead of the scheduled F1 race on 3rd July 2016.

With a proven track record, the Nypol product family provides consistent, enhanced performance across a broad spectrum of applications and performance needs. Along with its reduced temperature susceptibility over the working temperature range and enhanced resistance to rutting and deformation, Nypol 65 gives improved cohesion and adhesion, plus offers protection against cracking and fatigue failure.

These are some of the reasons why Nynas recommended using Nypol 65 for the tough requirements of this racetrack. Together with the project consultant and the contractor, a quality PMB complying with EN 14023 was selected, and 800 tonnes of Nypol 65 were used in the project.

Details

Although the details are confidential, the new racetrack has been positively received by drivers and stakeholders following the Grand Prix in July 2016. All technical requirements have been met, and the circuit’s optimised driving conditions have even been highlighted by the F1 teams.
