Creating a sustainable future is high on the agenda for every sector, and its importance within the bitumen industry was recently highlighted at the sixth annual Argus Europe Bitumen conference, held 10-11 June in Istanbul, Turkey.
At the conference Wim Teugels, Crude and Feedstock Specialist, Nynas, discussed what factors influence refiners to produce bitumen and also how refiners’ choices can affect bitumen properties. He touched on crude selection and refining options as key factors in producing quality bitumen, as well as some reasons why a refiner decides to include bitumen in its product portfolio. The presentation sent a strong message that bitumen is a specialist oil product and therefore involves a sophisticated decision-making process to produce it.
Other key speakers included Étienne le Bouteiller, Executive Director, IBEF, who talked about innovation in bitumen emulsions for road maintenance; Christophe Nicodème, Director General, European Union Road Federation (ERF), presenting on the topic of financing the European road network; and Jonathan Weston, Editor, Argus, on the general trends within the crude oil sector.
Attendees included bitumen producers and modifiers, as well as representatives from the construction and government sectors. The event gave a unique chance to network and explore key topics such as global supply and demand dynamics, how to increase sustainability, investment opportunities, research developments and new emulsification applications.
