A feel for lubricating greases

When the leading names in the lubricant industry meet up in the USA this summer, one of the technical presentations will be given by Mehdi Fathi-Najafi, group specialist at Technical Development and Market Support, Nynas Naphthenics.

On 10-13 June, the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) will be holding its annual gathering in Squaw Creek Olympic Valley in California. NLGI is an international industry organisation primarily for grease manufacturers, additive suppliers, distributors and equipment manufacturers.

According to tradition, a number of interesting technical presentations will be given in connection with the annual meeting. On 13 June, Mehdi Fathi-Najafi, Senior Technical Advisor, will be speaking on the subject of “The Impact of Raw Materials on the Characteristics of Lithium Complex Greases”.

The starting point for the presentation is the fact that the higher solvency of the base oil has a significant impact on several properties of lubricating greases. In the investigations in which Mehdi Fathi-Najafi has been involved, the focus is on the impact of the degree of solvency power of three naphthenic oils on two different Lithium complex greases.

“It has emerged that naphthenic oil with medium viscosity performs very well in different types of lithium complex grease formulations and the solubility of base oil affects the structure of grease in a positive direction,” he says. “Furthermore, the formulation of a lithium complex grease can be easily optimised by using suitable base oil and complexing agent.”

The impact of IMO 2020

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced that it will dramatically lower the global limit on sulfur content for marine fuels from the current 3.5% to 0.5% as of 2020. The aim is to significantly curb pollution produced by the world's ships. Three experts reflect on what this means.
