In a study entitled "Blends: Friends or Foes?" Nynas researchers argue that the lubrication industry has a lot to gain from promoting base oil blends for grease formulations.
Blends offer the opportunity to turn the disadvantages of the current surplus of Group II and Group III oils into an advantage. Nynas researchers found that by blending these with naphthenic oil, the two main drawbacks of Group II and III base stock – reduced solvency or solvent power, and a lack of high viscosity oil grades – can be overcome easily. In their study, they produced three lithium-based greases by blending Group I, II and III oil with naphthenic oil. All three greases displayed good results in a number of tests. The lubricating grease based on the blend of paraffinic Group II and naphthenic oil performed particularly well.
