Sätaröd-Vä, Sweden

European route 22 (E22) is no less than 5,320 km long, from Holyhead in the UK via the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Latvia to Ishim in Russia. The part of the E22 that runs through Sweden plays a major role for the country’s southern region, not least because of the link to the Copenhagen area. The problem is that the road is very busy and accident-prone, and is also close to residential areas that are affected by noise.

This is the background to the rebuilding work that started in 2018 and should be completed by summer 2021 at a cost of around SEK 780 million (approx. EUR 76 million). The assignment that the construction company Peab was awarded by the Swedish Transport Administration includes 16 km of motorway (18.5 m wide), 26 bridges, 4 of which are pipe bridges, and one intersection.

Construction work is taking place largely on virgin land. The base course consists of asphalt gravel (AG) with 70/100 binder, the binder course is asphalt-based (ABB), also 70/100, and the wearing course is an asphalt concrete (ABS) with 50/70 – in total approximately 45,000 tonnes, of which 2,250 tonnes consist of binder.
