Requirement
Bułgarska street in Poznań runs beside a football stadium and links two busy roads, Grunwaldzka street and Bukowska Steet. Two lanes wide, Bułgarska street was heavily trafficked. Making matters worse, the stadium was to be extended and required additional parking. The decision was taken to reconstruct and widen 1km of Bułgarska street to improve traffic flows plus enlarge the existing stadium parking area. One factor that had to be taken into consideration was the existence of a housing estate and a large accumulation of single family houses near the stadium. The problem was how to minimise noise disturbance caused by heavier traffic flows on the newly refurbished road.
Solution
It was decided to use a noise reducing surface course for the section of street being rebuilt; thereby improving traffic flows along Bułgarska street while at the same time ensuring that ambient noise levels were kept to a minimum. A Nynas product of proven suitability for low noise surfacing – Nypol 86 – was chosen for the job.
Details
The decision taken to employ an asphalt bound by Nypol 86 binder produced under Polish standard PN-EN 14023 the equivalent of a polymer modified asphalt 65/105-60.
The structure of the road comprised:
- a 10cm base course of 35/50 asphalt
- a 9cm binder course
- a 3cm surface course of the Nypol 86 bound asphalt
The mixture was designed at the laboratory of the General Directorate of National Roads & Motorways (GDDKiA) in Poznań. A total of almost 24000m² of 'quiet' surfacing was laid.
The refurbishment of Bułgarska street led to an improvement in traffic movement around the stadium ahead of the European Football Championship.
