The process of life

Process oils are as ever present as they are important to our everyday lives. As consumer demand changes, we at Nynas adjust to move forward with it.

Picture the scene. A man is riding the train home from work, he gets comfortable and takes his shoes off while he adjusts his glasses to focus on the news headlines on his iPad. He wonders if he'll make it home in time to get his children ready for bed. Then he spots an advert on a discarded newspaper for a cruise aimed at pensioners, prompting him to think about his elderly parents.

Our fictive man is probably unaware that he is surrounded by process oils. They go into the plastic on the frame of his glasses as well as the rubber soles on his shoes. Demand for process oils to make battery separators, used in the tablet computer he's replaced his morning paper with, has never been higher. His thoughts go to the wellbeing of his family - plasticising oils go into the adhesives for baby diapers and adult incontinence products, a growing market as populations get older.

At Nynas, we always try to develop products that fit the needs of the future requirements for our customers. Naturally, this means we adapt to the changing market.

Demographic changes, for instance, mean more people can now afford consumer electronics, which drives growth for batteries and process oils as a result. On the flipside, the publishing industry that we supply with printing inks has been hit by falling readership, so we are developing our oils to be used in inks for digital printing on ceramics.

In the future, the solvency of naphthenics will be used to enhance end product performance that cannot be achieved with other oils. There is a need for process oils with very low volatility and high levels of purity, particularly so considering how tightly regulated our industry is.

Consumer trends indicate that the need for naphthenic process oils will continue to rise. The chemical industry doesn't stand still, and neither do we at Nynas.
