Leon Li is in charge of Nynas’ business operations in the Chinese market. Find out what's on his mind.
I travel a lot to visit customers. With China being such a big country, this takes up a lot of my time. But these journeys are important and I really appreciate meeting our customers and discussing the market situation, and finding out more about their expectations for the future. My responsibility also includes giving guidance and support to my other sales colleagues as required.
My assignment as General Manager includes managing my colleagues in customer service in order to make sure that deliveries and invoicing take place on time. Issues relating to health, safety and the environment (HSE) play a major role in this process too. There is also ongoing reporting to Nynas’ head office, which requires extra considerations when Chinese public holidays coincide with normal working hours in Europe.
The office in China deals with both purchasing and sales within the Nynas organisation. This means that we must plan and manage local stocks of different products so that we can meet customers’ demands in a reasonable time and thus strike a balance between delivery reliability and costs. Booking ships from Europe and customs declarations when importing into China can sometimes pose a major challenge.
As an independent legal entity, Nynas’ sales office in China has to consider and comply with local regulations and national laws in everything from HR to taxes. This is a job that requires both time and engagement from me, as business activities in China are still rather complicated.
I have a daughter who is studying at upper secondary school. Later this year she will be taking entrance exams so that she can continue her studies at university. Most of my free time is spent helping and supporting her with various extra courses she is taking outside school.
With an MBA from Hong Kong Baptist University and many years’ experience from one of the major power transformer OEMs in China, Leon Li joined Nynas in 1996 and was put in charge of operations in the newly opened sales office in Beijing. Sales increased rapidly, and in 2002 the office was moved to Shanghai, with Leon Li being appointed General Manager at the same time. During his 25 years in the company, he has successfully developed Nynas’ business operations in the Chinese market.
