Born in Iran, Kamyar Alavi moved to Sweden as a young boy with his family in 1984. Kamyar was awarded his Master’s in Chemical Engineering at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), where he later gained his PhD in Polymer Technology. He first joined Nynas in 2007, since when he has since held a number of different roles relating to the tyre and rubber industry within the Technical Development and Market Support departments. After a two-year tenure in Singapore, he is once more based in Sweden, at the Naphthenics Technical Center in Nynäshamn. Find out what’s on Kamyar’s mind.
The shoe fits
Who’s this customer, what do they need? My job is basically about putting myself in the customer’s shoes, to understand their challenges and, more importantly, find a way to address these challenges jointly with the customer. And the lessons learned can of course be extrapolated and shared internally with our colleagues.
On the move
I spend a significant part of my working time travelling, mainly to visit customers but also to participate in conferences and other relevant events. Naturally a lot of time is spent on the road, or rather in the air, to get to and from the actual meeting or event. In time, you realise that you have created your own routine for travel to get the most out of the time. Usually we conduct market activities together with local sales representatives, who normally go the extra mile to take excellent care of us during our time at the actual location.
The personal touch
In my job, I meet with customers, both existing and hopefully soon-to-be ones, and engage in technical discussions with them. In the next step, ideas discussed need to be tested in reality, which obviously places demands on both time and other resources on the part of the customer. Such resources may not be granted so readily if you do not have a relationship with your counterpart in which they respect your technical input, while a personal relationship also plays an important role. These are things that are built up over time and strengthened through regular contacts and frequent follow-up.
Yes, there’s life outside the office as well. Life with my family and my two daughters provides a good perspective on my professional life. Once home, my attention needs to be directed elsewhere, which in its own hectic way is quite relaxing as I have to disconnect completely from work, even mentally. Family life also adds another dimension to why you do what you are doing.
The closure of Group I refineries will inevitably limit the availability of the high-viscosity mineral oils commonly used in tyre tread formulations. Nynas’ new tyre oil offers an alternative with excellent performance.
