Naphthenic rubber process oils have been used for quite some time -and with increasing success- by the tyre industry, combining high technical performance with desirable health, safety and environmental features. Their performance, however, in the technical rubber applications may not be equally known to the market, although naphthenic process oils have been used in many such applications.
In the light of changing base oil landscape and especially due to the declining availability of rubber process oils originating from so called group I refineries, the focus on naphthenic oils as suitable alternatives for the technical rubber industry has gained renewed attention. In particular, a new range of tailor-made plasticisers based on naphthenic oils has shown great potential in EPDM compounds, presenting an alternative to address the needs of the industry in terms of plasticising effect and compatibility with EPDM rubbers. In this presentation, we will show the performance and benefits of naphthenic rubber process oils in a number of different technical rubber applications, not the least in EPDM rubbers, comparing their performance to those of other rubber process oil alternatives.
Dr Alavi graduated with a M Sc degree in chemical engineering and later a PhD
degree in polymer science and technology from the Royal Institute of Technology
(KTH) in Stockholm. After spending a few years in the coating industry, working
with product development and innovation management, Kamyar joined Nynas to
support the market segments for tyre and chemical industries in 2007. After a
move for a couple of years with Nynas to Singapore, he was back to Sweden in
Sept. 2015, to hold a Senior Technical Advisor position for the rubber and TPE
