The tyre market is undergoing a lot of changes, but Nynas’ aim to be a global, reliable and competent solution provider remains intact.
There is currently a great deal of discussion about changes in the way we use and live with cars, not least as a result of developments in the fields of electric vehicles, autonomous driving and shared ownership.
It is not completely clear what these trends will mean for the tyre industry. For example, there are arguments for improving performance – as a result from higher torque from electric vehicles – but also for lower or different requirements, because autonomous driving means greater predictability and hence a less demanding driving style while also asking for longevity at the same time.
On the legal side, Brazil has now basically taken the same two steps that the European Union took in 2010 (tyre oil law) and 2012 (mandatory tyre labelling). There is a continued discussion on doing the same thing in China, with India being the latest country to join the debate. Meanwhile, Europe is taking the next step with the implementation of new indicators on winter performance on the tyre label.
Import taxes are high on the international agenda, although the tyre industry has seen such tariffs long before they became en vogue. There has been import taxation on tyres going into the US for years, and we have recently seen duties on Chinese truck (TBR) tyres coming into Europe.
These developments and numerous other factors will have an impact on the tyre market. But for Nynas, the pillars of the strategy we adopted some years ago remain the same: to be a strong partner in technical terms, underlined by the recent opening of our Nynäshamn rubber lab, and to offer a reliable logistics system, supplying the right and constant quality globally.
Naphthenic tyre oils provide unique benefits and comply with both existing and proposed legislation around the world. They contribute to technical performance such as reduced rolling resistance and enhanced winter properties. The result is improved safety, lower CO2 emissions for fuel driven cars and extended range for electric vehicles.
