Achieving excellence through research and development

The Nynas research team plays an essential role in the success of the company’s naphthenic oil business, as its experts collaborate and strive to develop high-quality, sustainable products.

Nynas has a long history of carrying out research. Since its establishment in 1928, the company has placed a high value on learning more about the composition of its products and analysing their performance in the applications they serve. As research methods have evolved over the years, Nynas has increased its knowledge and continued to enhance its product portfolio. In the rapidly changing world of today, it is especially important for Nynas to nourish its research, and to facilitate the development of the next generation of specialty oils and smart solutions for a sustainable future.

Sharing our expertise

The Nynas research group is represented by a series of specialists, each with a different knowledge background. Senior Staff Researcher Ann-Louise Jonsson is the focal point for enquiries related to the material chemistry of mineral oils, including the molecular structure of hydrocarbons and reactivity. Staff Researcher Pär Wedin has expertise in the material physics of oils and is leading projects to increase our understanding of the physical properties of naphthenic products. Research Manager Elena Minchak has several years of experience from research into renewable energy resources with an emphasis on biogas upgrading. She is responsible for planning and performing activities to increase knowledge in areas of strategic importance within the specialty oil field.

The team is involved in projects that aim to increase our understanding of the physical properties of naphthenic products by examining the relationship between oil and other materials where compatibility is advantageous, such as polymers, metal surfaces or insulating paper in the case of transformer oil.

Developing next generation of products

Conducting research projects with both a short-term and medium-term focus, Nynas monitors the latest industry technology and trends in order to push the boundaries when developing its products. As the world’s leading manufacturer of transformer oils, one area of high priority is research into the oxidation stability of naphthenic oils.

Much work has been carried out to better map the relationship between oil chemistry and electrical performance, which is vital not only for the growing number of electrical power systems in our society, but also for newly-developing applications such as electromobility.

A strong culture of collaboration between its research and development teams has given Nynas a platform to offer the widest transformer oil portfolio in the market. With input and expert knowledge provided by the Electrical Industry team, the company introduced NYTRO® BIO 300X, a high-performance bio-based transformer fluid made from renewable sources.

By making products that are not burned, but are instead used in applications with a long lifecycle, Nynas aims to provide sustainable value for society. In-depth research is critical, as the team evaluates renewable materials and circular solutions.

Pooling our knowledge

Over many years, Nynas has established strong contacts with a number of universities, providing input on degree and Master’s science projects, as well as PhD studies. This important work helps guarantee a high quality of research within the company, while supporting the academic community and paving the way for further developments in the industry. As an innovative and forward-thinking company, Nynas welcomes new partnerships, striving to be an employer that values creative thinking and technical talent.
