Head of Secondary Distribution since 2011, Rogier oversees and coordinates transport-related (when the product ends up on wheels) issues across the globe with suppliers, naphthenic affiliates and customers. He joined Nynas in 2005 as General Manager Naphthenics Benelux, after having worked for 20 years at a major French oil company. Rogier holds a Master’s degree in Business Management, and has also studied Mechanical Engineering. Find out what's on his mind.
In my role it is very important to work with suppliers as partners. Nynas is a customer-oriented organisation and our customers’ wishes need to be translated into value-adding (transport) solutions. This only works by having open communication with our transporters and forwarders to get maximum benefit of their practical experience. Internally, my role is to make sure that my colleagues are informed about market trends, restrictions, industrial practices, etc. I also spend considerable time on assisting our sales organisation with operational issues and/or challenges that need immediate attention and long-term solutions.
Nynas has a high-quality reputation that needs to be maintained. We move more than 35,000 loads of naphthenic oil from our depots to the end customer every year, transporting our products to remote and sometimes high-risk areas. Dozens of containers with Nynas products are at sea at any given time. This means that Nynas is exposed to transport risk all the time. We need to make sure that these risks are manageable, controlled and insured to avoid exposure that could damage Nynas’ reputation and results.
FAMILY AND HOBBIES
My two sons have already moved out to stand on their own two feet. This means I have time to put a lot of energy into my passion, which is working on classic cars. My current project is restoring a 1979 Mercedes SLC to make it into a “tribute” car, as this type of car won the 1978 South America rally, a trip of 28,000 km and the forerunner of Paris-Dakar. My wife supports this as she recognises that this hobby is the perfect therapy to achieve a reasonable work-life balance. We devote at least one day each weekend to family and friends, and we like to spend our summer holidays exploring places, such as road trips through the USA.
CHALLENGING THE STATUS QUO
Nynas was one of the first oil companies to use flexi tanks to transport our naphthenic products between continents more than ten years ago. We want to take our delivery systems further and are constantly looking at innovative transport solutions. Existing practices need to be benchmarked and challenged all the time to make use of expertise across the world and increase efficiency. We are a global company, but with a very lean organisation with high empowerment. To keep up with the changes in the world, we must remain agile. One of our current challenges is to link our order-to-invoice system to our immediate stakeholders, allowing full digital communication between systems.
More than simply recycling, circular economy is about capturing a larger part of the value that is typically lost in our traditional linear economic model. For Nynas, a circular approach is one of the things that separates us from regular oil companies.Read more about Time to go circular
