Nynas' operation in South East Asia is headed up by Rio Nasution. Find out what's on his mind.
My job satisfaction stems not only from successful business deals, but just as much from working with my team and giving all our energy to the process of achieving the deal, and being the best that we can be. Or, to quote Richard Branson: “We’ve got an engaging, edgy, vibrant, fun product. It may or may not work, but we’re going to give it our best shot.” At Nynas too, we may face failure at first, but I try to never lose momentum. Failure may make me pause, but it never stops my forward progress.
For me, innovation is the key to growing the Nynas business. The successful exploitation of new ideas in our business is crucial to improving its processes, bringing new and improved products and services to the market and to customers, increasing its efficiency and, most importantly, improving its profitability.
As a father, it is so interesting interacting and communicating with my 17 year old daughter and my 4 year old son, and trying to understand the meaning of the term 'helicopter parent'. And finally I have understood that pushing my boy to ride his bicycle for longer distances and checking on what my girl is doing online isn't helicoptering, it's parenting!
I appreciate working with others and believe that teamwork is important in Nynas as it brings us together from different backgrounds and levels of experience. Which reminds me of a quote from one of the best coaches in the NBA basketball league: "The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team." A team permeated with happiness and positivity will yield happy people and positive experiences, affecting the company's overall performance and customer retention.
My job involves regular travel to Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, and sometimes to Europe. This means that I meet, get to know and deal with people with many different variations of educational background, language, culture and religion. And I love it! From this experience, I have learnt that I need to surround myself with a diverse team – people who will bring their very best ideas, not just agree with you. If we value difference and implement diversity, our team will respect one another for who they are.
