Tailored Chemical Products, Inc.

Founded by Jack Temple, Jr. in 1977, Tailored Chemical Products manufacturers and sells a broad base of quality adhesives and specialty chemicals. The company produces a full-line of white glues, hot melts, pressure sensitive hot melts, caulks, wood fillers, mastics, emulsion polymers, urethanes, resins, water-based contact cements, packaging foams, foam insulation, and dextrins in addition to numerous other specialty chemicals. Headquartered in Hickory, North Carolina, Tailored Chemical Products has more than 300 employees in four production centres.

“Our growth is attributed to our commitment to customer satisfaction and versatility in product design,” says Jack Temple Jr., President of Tailored Chemical Products.

“By avoiding a ‘one size fits all’ attitude and always being willing to think ‘outside the box’ by adapting new or improved technologies and ideas, we can offer the best customized and comprehensive adhesive solutions to our customers.”

Tailored Chemical Products is one of the largest privately held and fastest growing adhesive companies in the United States. The company serves customers of all sizes; from Fortune 500 to small and medium-sized companies.

“We recognize that all customers started out small so we don’t penalize those with smaller demands. Whether a customer wants to buy one box or a full truck load, we sell them directly and at a competitive price.”

Although his company is smaller than some of its main competitors, Jack Temple Jr. believes in bringing value and innovation to his customers. Ultra- quick turnaround times is another hallmark that Tailored Chemical Products is built upon.

“In addition, we keep millions of pounds of finished product – both water-based and hot melt – on the floor at all times that can be shipped the same day. We learned a long time ago that it is ‘hard to sell from an empty wagon.’”

To prepare for and support the rapidly growing business, Tailored Chemical Products has reinvested over USD 30,000,000 in three new plants as well as trucks and processes since 2010.

“We now have over 350,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse space with a fifth and sixth manufacturing facility in the works for 2019 and 2020,” notes Jack Temple Jr., adding that they also operate the largest company-owned and operated fleet of tankers and trucks in the US adhesives industry.

Tailored Chemical Products has worked with Nynas since 2015, following the start of manufacturing block copolymer hot-melt pressure sensitive adhesive (HMPSA) products two years earlier. Nynas' reliability and consistency when it comes to always delivering products within the agreed range of specifications was a key factor behind the move, ensuring that Tailor’s products are always manufactured according to plan.

“We initially used a product from one of Nynas’ competitors. However, it did not maintain a consistent, low Gardner colour that we needed for some of our high-end HMPSA products. So, in 2015, we started buying one of Nynas NYFLEX® grades for adhesives, appreciating its light colour and excellent UV resistance.”

In 2017, Tailored switched over to NYFLEX® 223 in a seamless transition. Nynas’ flexibility to supply various package sizes and bulk tank trucks is now playing a key role to support Jack Temple Jr.’s efforts to continue expanding his business.

“Nynas’ supply and support have always been great, and the company seems to have a strong commitment to support the adhesive industry.”
