Environmental responsibility at sea

A new ship currently under construction will provide a modern, fuel-efficient platform to transport Nynas products in a cost-effective manner and support the transition to a sustainable company.

Like most other industries, shipping is undergoing major changes, not least as a consequence of new regulations targeting ships’ efficiency and carbon emissions. The new requirements are one important reason why Nynas is preparing to replace its faithful servant MT Thun Gothenburg, which transports naphthenic specialty oils, with a completely new vessel.

“The present vessel has served us well,” says Nynas Chartering Manager Andrew Hamill.

“But when we were given the opportunity to get involved at a very early stage of the owners Thun Tankers’ plans to build a new ship, and were also able to provide information that would benefit our trading operations, we decided to participate in the project.”

The new vessel, MT Thun Resource, is presently under construction at the highly respected Ferus Smit shipyard in the Netherlands. The launch is scheduled around mid-October, with delivery to Nynas likely to be early January 2024.

“The length of the vessel is 115 metres with a deadweight of just under 8,000 tonnes, while the cargo tank capacity is about 9,540 m3,” explains Andrew Hamill.

The starting point for the design is to further improve the tanker’s performance while at the same time reducing the climate footprint.

“The new vessel will provide a modern, fuel-efficient platform to transport our products in a cost-effective manner and assist us in our transition to a sustainable Nynas for the future,” concludes Andrew Hamill.
