Flexibility in a changing base oil landscape

When markets are unsettled, flexibility matters. In today’s changing base oil landscape, naphthenics can give lubricant formulators more room to manoeuvre, notes Simon Day, Vice President at Nynas.

The global base oil market is once again being reminded of the importance of flexibility. Ongoing geopolitical tensions are contributing to volatility and uncertainty across global supply chains. At the same time, structural changes in base oil production continue to reshape the options available to lubricant formulators.

In this environment, naphthenic base oils have an important role to play. Their value is not simply about replacing one base oil with another. Used intelligently in formulations, they can complement Group II, Group III and synthetic base stocks, helping formulators make more efficient use of available raw materials while maintaining – and in some cases enhancing – performance.

Their combination of solvency, low-temperature properties and, importantly, a wide viscosity range can be particularly valuable. By incorporating naphthenics into industrial lubricant formulations, it may be possible to reduce the amount of Group II or PAO required, while achieving a cost-effective formulation with the performance characteristics needed for the application.

This kind of formulation flexibility becomes especially relevant when markets are disrupted and particular base stocks are constrained or expensive. Having more tools in the formulation toolbox can help lubricant manufacturers respond without compromising the quality of the finished product.

But flexibility is not only about chemistry. Where products are produced, and how reliably they can reach customers, matters too. For our European customers, Nynas’ production base in Northern Europe provides proximity to the market at a time when long and complex global supply chains are increasingly being put to the test.

We believe this combination of versatile naphthenic base oils, technical expertise and production close to our customers has an important contribution to make in navigating today's changing base oil landscape.
