Powering the future

Iberdrola, Faramax and Nynas are combining decades of operational experience with new circular solutions to ensure reliability, sustainability and readiness for the energy transition.

Case story

IBERDROLA & FARAMAX

  • CHALLENGE: Prepare the grid for rising electrification demands while meeting ambitious sustainability goals.
  • SOLUTION: Collaboration across the value chain to pilot Nynas re-refined transformer oil NYTRO ® RR 900X in a standard high-voltage unit.
  • RESULT: Verified performance, unchanged transformer design and a step toward circular transformer oil management.

Iberdrola Group

Approaching 125 years since its origins, Iberdrola Group is a global energy leader, supplying energy to some 100 million people in dozens of countries. The group has a workforce of more than 40,000 employees.

i-DE, its electricity distribution company in Spain, operates in a regulated market and is responsible for developing, operating and maintaining the distribution network.

The first Iberdrola power transformer filled with Nynas oil entered service in 1994. Today, more than 600 power transformers across all standardised voltage levels use Nynas products.

For Spain’s global energy group Iberdrola, actively developing and upgrading the grid to meet future challenges is central to its operation.

“This includes preparing for growing demand for electrification from both industry and society, integrating distributed generation sources and accommodating electro-intensive consumers,” says Miguel Martínez Ronderos, Responsible for Standardisation and Maintenance of Power Transformers at i-DE, the electricity distribution arm of the Iberdrola Group.

Among Iberdrola’s most critical assets are power transformers, typically designed for up to 40 years of dependable operation. Some units in the company’s fleet, however, have been in service for more than 70 years.

“Within our department, we build on an extraordinary legacy of amassed knowledge and a fleet of assets maintained with great dedication. We also manage a vast amount of structured information that allows us to make informed decisions,” notes Miguel Martínez Ronderos.

The responsibility is clear: to leave everything in better condition than it was found. This long-term perspective aligns closely with Iberdrola’s sustainability ambitions and circular economy principles, forming the basis for collaboration with Nynas and Spanish transformer manufacturer Faramax Trafo.

Both Iberdrola and Faramax have worked with Nynas for decades, building relationships founded on trust, technical expertise and shared values around quality and sustainability.

”Over the years, Nynas has consistently introduced innovative solutions, including biodegradable and re-refined oils, aligning with market demands and evolving sustainability standards,” says João Guimarães, Purchase Manager at Faramax, whose experienced technical teams, modern manufacturing capabilities and strong focus on quality and reliability have contributed to the company’s success and continuous growth.

“The circular NYTRO® RR 900 X represents a significant step forward in applying circular economy principles to our sector that goes hand in hand with our sustainability objectives and commitment to resource optimisation,” adds Miguel Martínez Ronderos.

To explore this innovation further, the three companies launched a pilot project using NYTRO RR 900 X in a 132/20 kV, 40 MVA power transformer – a strategically important unit within the Iberdrola network.

“The design of the transformer was completely standard, with no modifications required, and both factory and on-site tests were fully satisfactory,” says Miguel Martínez Ronderos. “Since commissioning, it has been operating normally, and we are conducting a very thorough monitoring program on the oil’s condition to ensure everything performs as expected.”

”While there is not yet operational data for a full evaluation, no issues were encountered during the FAT, and the dielectric performance was exactly as expected,” adds João Guimarães.

For Iberdrola and Faramax alike, the project reflects a broader ambition to combine innovation, reliability and environmental responsibility while opening up new opportunities to manage the full lifecycle of transformer oils.

“We believe that collaboration across the entire value chain is essential to meet the challenges of the energy transition. Projects like the RR 900 X pilot show that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand, delivering tangible benefits for both the industry and society,” says Miguel Martínez Ronderos, noting that one of the most valued aspects of working with Nynas is their responsiveness to customer needs.

Faramax Trafo

Faramax Trafo is a Spanish manufacturer specialised in the design, engineering and production of power transformers and shunt reactors, including magnetically controlled shunt reactor solutions for reactive power and voltage control. The company serves power generation and transmission utilities, renewable energy developers, power plants, EPC contractors, and railway and traction operators.

From its facilities in Spain, Faramax delivers complete transformer projects – from design and manufacturing to testing, installation support and after-sales services – serving customers in both domestic and global markets.

“It is truly encouraging to have conversations where our inputs are taken into account and transformed into new products or solutions that meet emerging needs, but it also includes handling and prioritising problem-solving in those unavoidable cases when everything is not perfect.”

This view is shared by Faramax. João Guimarães highlights Nynas’ collaborative approach, clear communication and practical mindset:

”Throughout our longstanding partnership, Nynas has actively supported our growth and development by consistently introducing innovative solutions. Their expertise, proactive approach and technical support have allowed Faramax to enhance product reliability while meeting increasing environmental and performance requirements.”

As demands on electrical grids continue to evolve, the road ahead will require openness, creativity and a willingness to challenge established practices. Both Iberdrola and Faramax see continued collaboration with Nynas as key to developing more resilient, efficient and sustainable networks for the future.

“Looking ahead, we see Nynas as a reliable supplier and key partner in exploring new solutions that support both our operational goals and sustainability commitments,” says João Guimarães.

“For us, Nynas is not just a supplier, but a trusted partner in driving innovation and supporting the energy transition,” concludes Miguel Martínez Ronderos.
